Subject: [Ecell-devel] ODE/DAE modules development plan
X-Mailer: Ximian Evolution 1.4.5 (1.4.5-7)
Regarding differential equation-related (ODE/DAE) features of E-Cell 3,
here is the current short and middle-term plan, which I believe is the
agreement between me and the maintainer of ODE/DAE Steppers, Kazunari
Kaizu.
Eventually, E-Cell 3 will have these two primary Steppers for
differential and differential-algebraic systems:
- ODEStepper
This name is given to the best ODE solver implemented on E-Cell 3
at that time. However, my plan is to give this name to a Stepper
that satisfies at least these criteria: (1) single step,
self-starting (2) adaptive step sizing, (3) effective local
consistency of at least fourth order, (4) stiffness proof (at least
A-stable and stiffly accurate). (4) will probably be achieved by
employing adaptive switching between implicit/explicit schema.
I hope we can launch this in the first half of 2004.
- DAEStepper
The best DAE solver module will be given this name. I expect
the Stepper based on Radau5 scheme, on which Kazunari is now working
on, would show enough benchmark to become this. The new Stepper
is now under performance tuning and debugging, and perhaps be
shipped with the next version 3.1.100. This will be available
before ODEStepper because it will be a mix of this DAEStepper and
already available ODE45Stepper. this can also be used as an ODE
solver for still systems.
The only difference between ODE and DAE Steppers would be that
DAEStepper runs relatively slow on non-stiff systems.
