Hi Randal,
The talk of funding is necessary, to a point; but, it
must be understood that once we finally upload a
human being successfully, everything changes. The
result would not be just an upload, but a _human-level
artificial intelligence_. The person could be copied
easily, once you have one, you could make more - each
that same person, but on divergent parallel timelines.
What would money mean to an uploaded person? What
would it mean to a mind that could be transmitted to a
robotic body on the moon?

If we excise essential parts of the mind from the
upload, then the result is not the full person, by
definition not the same person at all.
Sleep in particular will probably have to remain;
crucial steps in long-term memory formation take place
during sleep.

I agree that things will surely change; rather than by
removing essentials, it would occur by addition. The
upload is already in an artificial brain; what's wrong
with adding a few USB ports, a few peripherals, the
internet...

If you, as an upload, go on "living", you will
invariably encounter new griefs, fears, resentments,
and guilts. That's life.

Without fears, would you program saftey factors into
your aircraft? Why bother with saftey, right? Strap
some JATO units and a wing onto your uploaded computer
and see how fast you can go.
I just can't see it happening like that. Instead, you
would be adding things like a bank of processors
running Mathematica or Maya.
