Hi Randal,
That is a good question. As King and Thomas pointed
out the proposed school may not be radically different
from the way the existing educational or research
institutions work. But the fundamental idea is to
create "a well-defined superstructure" for MURG.
The school idea has several benefits, like:
- being a platform for generating money to support
its research efforts
- get recognition
- a school would attract various people, as opposed
to a research institution. What this means is, one
research problem could be viewed in different angles
and one research solution could be benefitting other
research problems.
Hope that answers your question.

Hi King,
That is a real good job.I have juggled the elements
slightly and i have modified the diagram.
Also,think about the following points:
1.It is not necessary that only the "soft" brain
interface could lead to a long term gradual
replacement.
2. The Brain implant need not be necessarily on the
brain. I think the implant could be mounted on the
cranial bones and just the micro-electrodes could be
guided to the necessary synapses.
3. "Hard" and "soft" approaches may compliment each
other, may not necessarily stay as separate streams.
i.e.the "Soft" approach could help us in developing
connections between the brain and the implant without
damaging the brain by physical incisions
My bet is on developing implants for the qudraplegic
or hemiplegic patients, where the implants take over
the function of firing electrical/chemical signals to
control limbs, according to the inputs received from
the brain or from an external stimuli on the limbs.
Any comments?
cheers
siva
