Thanks Joseph G., I'm sure the pros here, and I'm not one, have logged
that information away for further use where and when and if relevant.
They're really bright people here and usually get the idea in one take.
They are not frivolous nor wasteful, won't toss out good information and
always respectful when respected in kind.

Now if I may invite discussion of some of these ideas, assuming some
level of discussion and acknowledgement may prevent need of further
repetitive offerings, and noting one must needs start somewhere I will
begin with my layman's take only on the femtosecond laser.

From what I read about it, it is oblative and therefore destroys
tissue. Even though it is very finely controlled and extremely precise
it seems to me, in my ignorance, to destroy what it comes in contact
with. It's purpose after all is finely controlled destructive machining
or milling that removes material, vaporizes it, so quickly as to leave
surrounding materials untouched and unheated. In other words, I do not,
in my ignorance, know that it is capable of reaching deeply into soft
tissue such as the brain, passing by living tissue so as to reach a
certain vector in order to read the coordinate relational position data
of some neuron to another or the finer tendrils without destroying
everything in its path and the targeted neuron. Furthermore, I don't see
how it can read the many chemical states of said neuron either.

Without reaching deeply into and past living tissue without harming it,
we have the situation of layer by layer distruction of the brain
progressively mapping and destroying it from outer to inner regions
layer by layer. The problem I see with this is that it could not do so
quick enough to prevent the brain dyng too fast to eventually reach the
inner portions and find them still intact and not destroyed already
through apoptosis and ischemia. I am assuming that using a laser to read
the brain is done so as to gain some sort of advantage of precisision
over slice by slice scanning of a frozen brain that may depending on
developmental level cryogenic method of preservation have suffered loss
of fine resolution from freezng damage..

I must stress my total lack of professional knowledge here so I may be
making a total and complete ass of myself but I'm not one to shy away
from that as Eugene Leitl and Joe Stout I'm sure will nod to the
affirmative. However, I do know there are current attempts to use a
laser to define brain structure I just don't think this particular laser
is part of that or applicable.

I can imagine, again in mere laymans ability only, that there may one
day be a way to aim some sort of energy beam, possibly vectoring two,
that may have the capability of passing through solid bone and soft
tissue leaving them unharmed and as well have the fine resolution
required to map the pattern of neuronal conectivity as well as the
various chemical states. I am assuming it would be preferrred to be able
to scan thus a living brain during its operation so that the many states
of operation of a neurons and their relation to others may be closely
monitored as well as mapped. In other words maybe simply having the
pattern of raw neuron connectivity is not enough and only a living brain
scanned while still alive would provide a reliable upload. It is also
quite possible that this sort of light or energy beam concept may prove
to be and remain pure fantasy.

Now I leave it to the pros to totally blow me out of the water and I
welcome it so I and we all may learn.

Thanks to all,

James
