Candidates with a background in cellular and/or systems
electrophysiology and a quantitative perspective are sought to
participate in two projects studying adaptation and activity propagation
in the rat somatosensory system. The projects will explore the temporal
dynamics of thalamic and cortical responses to sensory stimulation in
the rat whisker pathway. The positions available will involve either (a)
in vitro experiments (whole cell patch-clamp and microelectrode array
recordings in acute slices) or (b) in vivo experiments (single-unit
recordings) and data analysis. The successful candidates will be
involved primarily in either type of experiments, but will be encouraged
to develop their work through close links to the other experiments. The
positions will be funded by the European Commission and by the Human
Frontier Science Program; a prominent aspect will be strong
international collaboration including opportunities to spend 1-2 months
per year abroad.

Funding for up to 3 years will be available from late 2004.
The Instituto de Neurociencias (Alicante, Spain, http://in.umh.es) is a
young and growing (approx. 50 labs) neuroscience research centre and has
just moved into new facilities including core support for
electrophysiology and imaging. The close-knit Neurophysiology unit
provides opportunities for lively scientific exchange. The Institute is
situated close to the shore in a sunny location that enjoys the best
year-round weather in Europe and convenient living conditions. Please
send enquiries to Miguel Maravall (mmaravall at umh.es) providing a CV and
the names of two or more references.
