No, the existance of human-grade AI is not horrible per se. It just marks a
watershed event, resulting in a self-enhancement runaway. Really quick
runaway.

If everyone's dead due to side effects (basically, just winding up at the
receiving end of the industrial pollution thing) there will be clearly no
uploads.
