HOMEOSTATIC PLASTICITY IN THE DEVELOPING NERVOUS SYSTEM
Gina G. Turrigiano & Sacha B. Nelson
http://info.nature.com/cgi-bin24/DM/y/eNdy0Bf6Sf0C40IDA0Ac
Activity-dependent plasticity, such as long-term potentiation or
long-term depression, would tend to destabilize the activity of
neurons and circuits if it was not countered by homeostatic
mechanisms. Turrigiano and Nelson review the evidence that
homeostatic synaptic plasticity works to maintain the excitability of
neurons and circuits.
