A postdoctoral position is available from September 1st, 2004, to study the 
network mechanisms underlying cortical processing of facial expressions in 
primates. 

The research carried out within the LIMBO group at SISSA will focus on 
mathematical analyses of neural network models and on psychophysics with 
healthy human subjects, but in the framework of a collaborative project, 
recently funded by the Human Frontier Science Program, with Prof. Ray Dolan 
at University College London, whose lab will focus on fMRI, and with Prof. 
Bharathi Jagadeesh at Washington University in Seattle, whose lab will focus 
on single-unit recordings in macaques. Additional collaborations may develop, 
including some leading to neuropsychological studies. The project is based 
on the use of emotional facial expressions as a model system to analyse the 
specifics of memory-based cortical information processing, given that a 
subcortical pathway, providing alternative access to the amygdala, can be 
favoured or blocked by suitable stimulus manipulations. 

The only prerequisite is a keen interest in the research topic, although a 
background in theoretical physics, experience with psychophysics and a smiling 
attitude are all advantageous, in whatever combination. The tiny but vibrant 
Cognitive Neuroscience sector of SISSA includes groups led by Mathew Diamond, 
Tim Shallice, Raffaella Rumiati, Jacques Mehler and Luca Bonatti. The LIMBO 
group is located in the Miramare campus SISSA shares with the International 
Centre for Theoretical Physics, next to the Adriatic sea. Applicants should
