I think a similar movement could take place within the
research community, and it also illustrates the politics
of science can be very complex, that has nothing to do
with science per se. Some scientists think that it is a
god-given right to take tax-payer's money to do their
own research and afterwards release the results to the
public domain. This perspective is NOT free of ideology.
I think we should focus on solving the problem of
funding, not just for those people in academia only.

The original patenter can prevent the new extension from
being used without a license of the original invention.
Otherwise, patents would be meaningless.
