Subject: [Neuro-IT] Call for proposal 'start-up' measures
X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook, Build 10.0.6626

Please alert your students and postdocs to possibility
number 4. It is an opportunity for them to spend a while
in a different lab/city/country.

Neuro-IT.net third call for 'start-up' measures

Neuro-IT.net has a small budget (approximately 100k? in total) to
fund so-called 'start-up' measures. 'Start-up' measures are intendend
to reduce the cost and effort of starting up a new line of research.

Quite often a lab, in trying to create a new line of research, will
start to develop or buy the technology that is needed, although it might
be available at other sites, and could be used with no, or minor
modifications. Neuro-IT-net wants to promote the use of existing
infrastructure and to stimulate the exchange of know-how and experience
between labs, within the EU and its associated members, that are active
in the field of NeuroIT.

Four areas have been identified to promote this goal:

1) Joint design of common tools
Examples are: micro-drives or multi-electrode equipment for single-cell
recordings. Robot heads, arms, hands. Special purpose sensors, etc.

2) Exchange of experimental tools for short periods.

3) Direct use of an existing experimental set-up
Here the creative use of an existing experimental set-up is intended,
which is applied in a way which is radically different from the research
that it was originally created for. E.g., a robot head, originally
designed for oculomotor studies, is now applied for tracking people in
   a surveillance environment.

4) Exchange of personnel.
The support of talented young researchers for cross-disciplinary
training, e.g. by funding fellowships in biology for engineers or
   hardware/software design for biologists.

NeuroIT.net welcomes proposals from its members for financial support in
this area.

Proposals will be judged three times a year, December 1st, April 1st and
August 1st.

Maximum grant: 10 k?

Next deadline: December 1st

Applications should be sent to
<http://www.neuro-it.net/mailman/listinfo/general> info at neuro-it.net.

Applications will be judged by NeuroIT.net's steering committee.

'Exchange of personnel' is intended for young scientists (approximately 35
years, exceptions for maternity leave, etc. can be made, however,
when motivated).

An application should clearly describe the proposal, why it fits within the
scope of NeuroIT, what the money should be used for, total amount of money
required. It should address one of the four areas, described above.

Finally, succesful applicants will be asked to report on the impact of the
grant for their work, and to present their work at one of NeuroIT.net's
meetings.
